American Veteran

America’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have created a new population of American veterans: service members so severely disabled they would have not survived in previous wars, but because of advanced medical technology, they survive. We’ve figured out how to keep them alive and bring them back home—but what then? American Veteran is a feature-length documentary portrait of one such soldier, Army Sergeant Nick Mendes. Nick was paralyzed from the neck down by a massive improvised explosive device in Afghanistan in 2011, when he was 21 years old. Despite severe physical injuries and PTSD, Nick’s mind is clear, and his spirit and sense of humor are very much intact.

Filmmakers will participate in a Q&A following the screening.

AlphaGo

With more board configurations than there are atoms in the universe, the ancient Chinese game of Go has long been considered a grand challenge for artificial intelligence (AI). On March 9, 2016, the worlds of Go and AI collided in South Korea for an extraordinary best-of-five-game competition coined the Google DeepMind Challenge Match. Millions around the world watched as a legendary Go master took on an unproven AI challenger for the first time in history. AlphaGo chronicles the journey from the halls of Cambridge through the backstreets of Bordeaux, past the coding terminals of DeepMind in London, and, ultimately, to the seven-day tournament in Seoul. As the drama unfolds, deeper questions are asked about technology and humanity.

Presented in partnership with GoCanvas.

Virtual Reality demonstrations will also be available in the Bow Tie Cinemas Bar & Lounge for audiences using Google Cardboard technology.

Corridor Four (Opening Night)

Our image of the American hero is challenged in this heartfelt portrait of a 9/11 first-responder. Isaac Ho’opi’i works to put the traumatic experience behind him with the support of his family and his love of music.

The celebration will continue following the Opening Night World Premiere screening of Corridor Four on October 26, 2017. Mingle, network, and be merry at our reception following the screening. Light appetizers and drinks will be available.

Filmmakers and subject will participate in a Q&A following the Thursday night screening.
