2013 — SHELTER HOUSE PROJECT
In 2013, box office proceeds were dedicated to renovating Shelter House. In addition to the monetary contribution, over 40 audience members volunteered to personally assist with painting, carpet replacement, and to update furniture in three Shelter House locations. Together, Washington West staff and audience members worked over two weekends to improve permanent housing for homeless families.
Shelter House, Inc. is a community-based, non-profit organization serving homeless families in Fairfax County, Virginia. Formed in 1981, when several ecumenical groups came together to better serve Fairfax County’s low-income population. In 2007, Shelter House was awarded Fairfax County’s contract to operate the Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter in Fairfax. In 2010, Shelter House became the first nonprofit to operate Artemis House, Fairfax County’s only 24-hour Domestic Violence Shelter.
